Interactive gaming has made its way to Gastown. SmartyPantz has launched Downtown Vancouver’s first Escape Room facility with film-level props and effects. Are escape rooms the next big thing? Chris Ricard and Dan Civiero certainly think so. Last week, the entrepreneurial duo launched Downtown Vancouver’s first escape room, with plans to expand across Western Canada.
Escape rooms (aka real-life room escape) are the latest craze to hit Metro Vancouver. Their rapid growth in Asia – and now Canada – suggests that they’ll find a permanent place within Vancouver’s gaming culture. The experience simulates interactive problem solving in real time. It’s fun, hands-on and bound to get your heart racing.
While Escape rooms have been commonplace in Japan and China for many years, SmartyPantz has opened the very first puzzle room in Vancouver. There are 5 rooms to choose from including the crazy Dreamscape to the scary Thirst for Murder. Come bring your friends to play. Reporter Laura Dennis provides insight into some great things to do on a rainy day in Vancouver. Fight fear, claustrophobia and time itself at SmartyPantz. Get locked in one of five themed rooms—from a doomed Soviet submarine to a serial killer’s basement—each with an extensive backstory. The detailed rooms found inside a Gastown heritage building were designed by professional prop masters in the film industry. Solve puzzles as a team and use logic to escape before the 45-minute time limit is up.
Local entrepreneurs, Chris Ricard and Dan Civiero, have done their homework and will be opening the doors on Vancouver’s first Escape Room entrant, SmartyPantz, in Gastown in February. Ricard and Civiero are game and puzzle enthusiasts who heard about Escape Rooms through Ricard’s MBA program experience. The pair have enlisted experts from the film and television industry and are committed to providing the most immersive, visceral and social escape room experience. The rooms all have a back story, with a host actor, in costume, to guide you through your journey. Ricard and Civiero already have plans to open in Edmonton and Calgary in 2015. The sky’s the limit!
